Earlier this month, the Atlantas Marine team was in Plymouth to assist ACUA Ocean with a demonstration of Pioneer, its uncrewed surface vessel (USV). The day brought together delegates from several offshore organisations and the Royal Navy to see the vessel working at sea and deploying an ROV.
About Pioneer
Pioneer has no crew on board. It is electrically powered by an onboard diesel generator and controlled from a control centre ashore by a three-person team. A commercial vessel master runs the vessel alongside a vessel engineer, who monitors its systems and communications, while an ROV supervisor flies the ROV.
The ROV was designed and supplied specifically for Pioneer by Forssea Robotics, based in Sète, France. Its deployment and recovery are also controlled from shore.
The Demonstration
The day began with a detailed explanation of the vessel and its systems, followed by a practical demonstration at sea, including deployment of the ROV. ACUA Ocean were clear that Pioneer is the first iteration of the concept and is still at prototype stage.
Supporting Innovation in Uncrewed Operations
Reducing the need for people to work in hazardous offshore conditions runs through everything we do. Uncrewed surface vessels take that idea further, removing the crew from the vessel as well as from the water.
We want to be involved as new approaches like this develop. Our team operates ROVs on live inspection work, and we are glad to put that experience to use in assisting with demonstrations such as this one.
