Project Overview

Atlantas Marine was contracted to conduct an underwater hazard clearance operation at a former activity center quarry. The project aimed to remove 150-200 soft-line debris remnants, including buoyant ropes attached to concrete barrels, left from a decommissioned floating aqua park. These lines posed significant safety risks for divers and ROV operations, requiring a comprehensive clearance to prepare the site for future research and development activities. The operation spanned two primary zones within the 80-meter-deep quarry, involving precision cutting and debris removal using the VideoRay Mission Specialist Defender ROV. The work included navigating challenging conditions, such as low visibility due to silt, and executing pre-programmed grid searches to ensure thorough hazard elimination. In total, 208 lines were removed, clearing the site for safe underwater operations. This project showcased Atlantas Marine's expertise in addressing complex underwater challenges through innovative ROV technology.

The Problem

Hazardous Underwater Environment at a Former Activity Center Quarry

A former activity center quarry, previously utilized as a floating aqua park, posed significant challenges due to leftover underwater debris. Approximately 150-200 soft-line remnants, primarily buoyant ropes attached to concrete-filled barrels (referred to as “sinkers”), were scattered throughout the quarry at varying depths of up to 80 meters. Many lines were tangled or intertwined, creating midwater obstructions and complex entanglement risks.

These remnants presented multiple hazards:

  1. Operational Risks: The entangled and floating lines obstructed safe navigation for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and divers, increasing the likelihood of snagging or equipment damage during underwater operations.

  2. Safety Concerns: For future diving and research activities, these buoyant lines posed direct risks of entanglement, threatening diver safety.

  3. Environmental Impact: Left unchecked, the debris could further entangle or displace submerged objects, including sunken vehicles and structures, complicating site usage and conservation.

  4. Visibility and Accessibility Challenges: Poor visibility caused by silt and the depth of the quarry made locating and addressing debris difficult, requiring precise technology and expertise to ensure complete clearance.

To prepare the site for future underwater research and development, it was essential to eliminate these hazards, ensuring a safe, navigable, and accessible environment. The complex nature of the debris and the challenging underwater conditions demanded an advanced solution that could deliver precision, efficiency, and safety.

Our Solution

A Comprehensive and Precision-Driven Clearance Operation

Atlantas Marine conducted a meticulous underwater hazard removal operation, deploying advanced ROV technology to ensure safety, precision, and efficiency. Using the VideoRay Mission Specialist Defender ROV, the team systematically addressed the complex challenges posed by the debris in two primary zones of the quarry.

  1. Detailed Planning and Risk Management:
The operation was carefully planned, with a thorough risk assessment and method statement to ensure safety and efficiency. The team analyzed the site’s layout, debris distribution, and environmental conditions, enabling effective operational strategies.

  2. Precision Hazard Removal in Zone 1:
The ROV navigated to depths of up to 75 meters, using SONAR and altimeter systems to locate and cut vertical and horizontal soft-line debris attached to concrete barrels. By maintaining clear visibility of targets and ensuring precise cuts, the team minimized the risk of debris re-snagging or obstructing other areas.

  3. Complex Line Clearance in Zone 2:
In areas with intertwined debris, the ROV’s high-definition cameras and manipulators effectively handled and removed obstructions. The team also relocated a freediving platform to a safe location for later removal, ensuring the zone was cleared of all known hazards.

  4. Comprehensive Verification:
To confirm complete clearance, the ROV executed semi-autonomous grid searches across both zones. This method ensured full coverage at varying depths, utilizing SONAR, high-definition video, and tether monitoring to identify and eliminate any remaining hazards.

The Result

A Safe and Fully Cleared Underwater Environment

The comprehensive clearance operation at the quarry achieved all objectives, creating a safer and more navigable underwater environment. By leveraging advanced ROV technology and precise execution, Atlantas Marine successfully removed hazardous debris, verified the site’s readiness for future use, and ensured compliance with safety standards. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in addressing complex underwater challenges.

  1. Hazard-Free Zones:
The operation successfully removed 208 soft-line debris remnants, eliminating all known entanglement risks. The quarry is now safe for future diving, ROV operations, and research activities.

  2. Enhanced Safety and Accessibility:
The precise removal of debris, along with the relocation of hazardous structures, ensured a safer environment for all underwater operations. The diver-free approach also minimized human risk during the clearance process.

  3. Thorough and Verified Completion:
The semi-autonomous grid searches provided clear confirmation that no visible hazards remained in the operational zones, giving stakeholders confidence in the site’s readiness for future use.

  4. Demonstrated Expertise:
This project showcased Atlantas Marine’s capability to address complex underwater challenges, combining advanced technology with skilled execution to deliver a successful outcome under difficult conditions.

Through careful planning, precise execution, and the use of innovative ROV technology, Atlantas Marine ensured the quarry was cleared of all identified hazards, meeting the client’s needs and setting the site up for future success.
